I would run as far away from that lt1 as I could because of the most feared thing in all lt1 owners....
OPTI-SPARK!!!!
Seriously though would not touch a car with a transplanted lt1 the opti spark is the worst thing ever designed for an engine.

Here, I'll talk you out of it!
Me: The Datsun looks better.

It this point with your car it would probably be cheaper to sell your engine and car and buy this before going through with an expensive swap. But you want to do it yourself don't you?!?!

Those are actually worse than the factory ones. There are kits now to convert the motor to coil packs like a Ls motor. The main problem is the water pump will leak onto the opti s causing it to go bad.
i owned a 97 Z28 with a lt1 and went through all of this

The swap is going to be done by me and some pals in DFW .. the LT1 swapped RX7 just looks like it would be so fun to hoon the fuck out of and then sell for more then I buy it for .. but . I dont have the money ..

Good to know. I had a '95 Formula with an LT1. Got rid of it before I had a major failure. My LS2 GTO has mad me an LS fan. So much better.

Yeah It took me a week to do a plug and wire swap on the 97 mainly fought water pump problems, sold it as soon as I got it running for a 98 Camaro SS with the ls1 soooo much better. I will never have a lt1 powered anything unless its the 1970 LT1

My friend is building a RX-7 with a GM 5.3 and a T56.
Was owned by another friend before with a slightly built up 350. This was right after the swap with the 350. Distributor was arcing to the firewall.

It's barely heavier than the rotary....

The LT1 weighs barely anymore than the rotary.
With the extra hp, torque, reliability, simplicity and available parts it's worth the extra couple of pounds.

If you're going by the first google result that can't be correct.
According to the 1996 Chevrolet Corvette Specialist Book, the LT1 weighs 576.4lbs dressed and dry

LT-1 was an iron block. Its way heavier than a rotary. The aluminum block LS1 is pretty close though.

It's been proven that a full complete rotary when compared to a lt1 swapped RX-7 there is a very small difference in weight.
Comparing short block to short block ya the LT1 is heavier but fully dressed and full of fluids it's much closer.

I used to troll the RX-7 forums and LS swaps were the norm... I know these ended up being like 50 pounds heavier. I don't see how you could shed that extra 120 for the LT.

With the Turbo 2's full turbo system and all it's a pretty small difference in weight.
Like I said it's barely heavier. 100 to 200lbs isn't much when you take the pros into account. You've got better reliability, more parts available and more power for way cheaper.

Aw don't do that. Spare the Turbo II's from V8 swap hell!

Best friend is doing it already. 5.3 with a T56. Don't mind the wiring it was like that when he got it.
Owned by another friend before that had a built 350 in it. Bought it as a roller that had a small block in it already.

At least its a Gen IV aluminum block!
Cool project. I'll admit when it comes to speed you can't beat GM for hp/$.

I'm not even sure if it's aluminum. They came both iron and aluminum I just forget which one he got.

Been done before, there was actually a kit designed to fit Ford's 302. Still pretty cool though.

Wo there buddy I didnt do the swap ..
I REALLY REALLY Wish a rotary engine could be as reliable as this LT1 and still provide the same numbers ..

I think your numbers are a little off there bud . The rotary motor that came in this car you could most likely pick up by yourself and hold it. I dont think any of us are picking up a LT1 .. the weight difference between a LS and LT is about 200 pounds so I'm going to guess its at least a 200 lb difference ..

I'm doing the same swap into my 76 Datsun 280z "Datassun" I got a LM4 which is the all aluminum version of the 5.3 which one did he get ? how easy / difficult has the wiring been ? ?

I haven't seen the car in a while but I think it's an 05 engine. Kinda doubt it's aluminum.

mines out of a izuzu acender from 2004 . just gotta do the research on these things I figure like my datsun the Rx7 was fun because its light and you dont want to add too much weight .. so I busted my ass finding a aluminum 5.3 ...

I really don't think that a even with an iron block it won't be that much heavier than stock. It's a Turbo 2 so you're also losing all the weight from the turbo system.
With the added hp and reliability 200lbs is a decent trade off.
Good luck with the project. I can't wait till my friend has his car out. I need a cruising buddy again.

350hp!? any rotary could make that all day long for 150,000 miles easy...
not yelling at you, just venting, but seriously, he added like 300 lbs to the poor car with no real performance gain that couldnt have been done with a stock turbo 2 motor and a turbo kit (all probably could be done for cheaper)
